It seems to me that the X-Factor is, more than anything, a reaction to the issues the recording industry has been having for the last few years. People who have been successfully making music for decades are having a hard time getting by in the current climate, so why do we need more singers? What the industry really needs are more superstars.

Kelly Clarkson achieved  mainstream success after winning American Idol

The formula for American Idol, as I noted before, is perfect. Record labels want records that will sell. Americans love to see average people succeed and the like to feel like they’re part of it. Everybody dreams of being discovered. Everybody likes to think that they have an amazing talent in them, which no one has been able to see. That is why American Idol works. You fall in love with the starry eyed kid with the great voice. You tell the record executives what you want to hear, then they sell it to you. Only that which is already popular ever gets made. The very fact that it gets made is the guarantee of its success. Meanwhile, you haven’t just watched a tv show, you helped someone’s dream come true. Years before crowd sourcing (or texting) would become popular, American Idol was doing both.

Possessing the X-Factor
Beyonce, Jay-Z, and U2 are not hurting with the rest of the music industry but they’re not pure singers either. Those acts are superstars. Those people can sell tickets and put butts in seats. Being Jay-Z is as much about the attitude and the image as it is the singing ability. Jay-Z or Bono would never make it through American Idol. If we’re being honest, neither would Beyonce. However, they have created franchises around themselves the likes of which even the most successful Idol alums have failed to create. That is what the X-Factor is looking for, hell it’s right there in the name. It’s not about just singing. It’s not about just dancing. It’s not about just having talent. The X-Factor is not really a talent search at all. It’s a quest to create a branded popular music experience. It’s not about what you can do now but what you’ll be able to do by the end.

  1. Bignote Bignote says:
Really good point about the prize money... A million dollars or five million dollars...it would seem to be about the same to the average viewer. It is a dreamy amount of money...but the exposure in the Pepsi ad airing in the superbowl is amazing.

  2. Todd.Brayburn Todd.Brayburn says:
It's all about total sales. Whichever show stumbles on the acts that bring the big $$, will endure.
