Crosby has broken the 100 point milestone four of the five and a half seasons he has played in the NHL. Less injuries, and it is really difficult to say that he would not have broken 100 every season to date. Over the course of his career, he has averaged just short of 1.4 points per game, which puts him on the top for active players. He has earned one Hart Trophy for his 120 point season in 06-07, but for Crosby, it is not solely about point production. If timeliness was next to godliness, Crosby would have been resting comfortably in the hockey heavens as he scored the overtime winner to bring the cup back to Pittsburg in 09 and the Gold Medal back to Canada in 2010.
Ovechkin stands atop a small handful of NHL players that can combine brute force and power with finesse and style, sometimes in the same play, to light the lamp. He is every opposing defenseman’s nightmare, and a primary concern for opposing goalies. Ovechkin has led the league in shots per game every year he has played in the NHL by a land slide. He will shoot from anywhere, drive hard to the net, pass when you think he is going to shoot, and, in general, reek havoc on even the best defensive systems. He also has one Art Ross Trophy (destined for the NHL's leading scorer) in his showcase and aside from his sophomore year, where he scored just 92 points, he has finished well over 100 points in four out of his 5 NHL seasons.
In terms of pure scoring prowess, I give the nod to Ovechkin over Crosby, based on his uncanny ability to find a way to the net regardless of who is on the ice with him. Ovechkin has consistently averaged more points-per-game over the last three years as well. [affiliate article=95]
