comparison review of reality tv shows, The X-Factor and American Idol

Tale of the Tape
First, the show that started it all. The reigning champion of the reality singing competition, American Idol (AI), is ten seasons old and still running two to three times a week in prime time on Fox. Season 11 of AI is slated to premiere this coming January.

American Idol’s chief opponent, The X-Factor, leverages its most recognizable persona and sets out to be a more considered, evolved iteration of the reality competition. Airing Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 PM on Fox, The X-Factor is a very real threat to AI's throne.

The Matchup
American Idol has become very successful with a formula. Anyone can audition, anyone can win, and everyone gets to vote. The added twist of having judges as a buffer between the performers and the audience has also proved incredibly fruitful. Often fans find themselves pulling for someone because they feel they’re not being given a fair shake by the judges (or usually one judge in particular). Not to mention, having a panel of people who know music telling you what you’re listening for often makes the audience feel more informed and engaged.

The X-Factor is designed to take all of the positives of American Idol and amplify them. The age limit has been lowered from American Idol to allow younger acts (as young as 12) to enter. Even more noticeable is the inclusion of group acts, while American Idol remains a competition of solo artists. The judges are also going to be active in ways that American Idol fans had never dreamed of. Possibly, the key difference between the shows is that the aim of The X-Factor, as outlined by Cowell himself, is to identify artists over singers or pop icons. That concept alone raises an interesting question as to whether a difference still exists in popular (top 40) music.
Now, let’s get this fight started.

7 Comments So Far …

  1. johnO johnO says:
I think the yellow ticket and 'you're going to Hollywood' has a far more appealing conclusion to each contestant's apppearance. X Factor really fell flat there.

  2. Jeremy Jeremy says:
I understand what you're saying, the ceremonial aspect of it is nice, but I have to say, forty thousand cheering fans applauding your auditions makes up for that to me

  3. JJizzle JJizzle says:
I like the X-Factor show better because the singers are different ages but dont we have enough singers? will the world topple off its axis if too many people sing at once?

  4. Betty Betty says:
The X-Factor should have brought back Brian Dunkleman.

  5. WarrenG WarrenG says:
It's weird, but I find Simon and Paula far more identifiable than Steven Tyler and J. Lo. AI did better in the ratings, but it's just b/c it's reached a level of fame that ensures a set amount of viewers. If AI stopped contestants from singing altogether for the next 3 seasons, the name alone would continue to draw viewers in the millions.

  6. Jaime92 Jaime92 says:
    X-Factor=DUD!

  7. Lisa B Lisa B says:
Interesting comparison... I like your approach. FWIW... I'd take the old AI or the new Xfactor.
