American Idol
In its ten-year term, American Idol has been through a few groups of judges. The original trio of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson were the soul of the original season. However, the lineup has had a number of storied changes. The most recent season saw Randy as the only remaining original judge. Joining him was significantly more star power than what we saw in the first season with Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler and pop icon Jennifer Lopez. Tyler has been more fascinating to watch than anything, as it’s often difficult to determine exactly what his critiques actually mean. While Lopez works, she feels largely like a watered down version of Abdul without quite as many colorful outbursts.

The X-Factor: Opts for personality over celebrity in its panel of judges

The X-Factor

However, the question raised when you see The X-Factor judging panel next to the current American Idol panel is just how important is the celebrity and how important is the personality. Since his early years on American Idol, Simon Cowell has become much more of a household name, but that is without question because he was such a force of personality on the show. Joining him again is Paula Abdul who continues to bring her lighthearted cheer to the show just as she did with American Idol. The wild cards this time out are the two new judges: former Island Def Jam producer L.A. Reid and lead Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. L.A. Reid is essentially playing the same role as Randy Jackson, the seasoned music producer. While he lacks a little of Randy’s homespun charm, he brings a sense of gravitas, an impressive resume, and a strong personality to the panel. Shortly into the first episode, L.A. Reid is portrayed as a counterweight, and at times, even a rival to Simon. The competitive tension between judges didn’t exist in AI, and hopefully it will evolve as the show continues.

Nicole was a late addition to The X-Factor’s cast. She actually got her start on a very similar show. It’s difficult to tell exactly what she’s going to be like as a judge. As yet, she hasn’t shown a whole lot of personality beyond being very excited about it being her birthday.

ROUND: Another round for the X-Factor based primarily on Simon and L.A. showing the critical flare that Idol has been missing since Cowell’s departure. The tension and pseudo competition between the two judges also adds an element to The X-Factor that American Idol lacks.

  1. johnO johnO says:
I think the yellow ticket and 'you're going to Hollywood' has a far more appealing conclusion to each contestant's apppearance. X Factor really fell flat there.

  2. Jeremy Jeremy says:
I understand what you're saying, the ceremonial aspect of it is nice, but I have to say, forty thousand cheering fans applauding your auditions makes up for that to me

  3. JJizzle JJizzle says:
I like the X-Factor show better because the singers are different ages but dont we have enough singers? will the world topple off its axis if too many people sing at once?

  4. Betty Betty says:
The X-Factor should have brought back Brian Dunkleman.

  5. WarrenG WarrenG says:
It's weird, but I find Simon and Paula far more identifiable than Steven Tyler and J. Lo. AI did better in the ratings, but it's just b/c it's reached a level of fame that ensures a set amount of viewers. If AI stopped contestants from singing altogether for the next 3 seasons, the name alone would continue to draw viewers in the millions.

  6. Jaime92 Jaime92 says:
    X-Factor=DUD!

  7. Lisa B Lisa B says:
Interesting comparison... I like your approach. FWIW... I'd take the old AI or the new Xfactor.
