American Idol
American Idol is the model on which every interactive reality show has fashioned itself. The voting system reinforces the attachment you have to your favorite singer, which in turn pulls you back in to see how things turn out for your preferred contestant. Eventually, once you’ve come back to the show over and over, you’re even more likely to pick up tickets to the big tour at the end of the season and to buy the record that comes out as a direct result of the show. It’s really a perfect, self-perpetuating loyalty machine. Why would you mess with a thing like that?

The X-Factor
The X-Factor deviates from the perfect system AI created. The logic behind it seems to be that putting people through the boot camp and sending them to the judges will make for better live shows. I like the idea personally, but it’s a huge risk. By disengaging the audience for the first ten episodes, including six after the auditions, you run the risk that they won’t be there when the voting starts. Will it pay off? Only time will tell.

ROUND: American Idol till someone tells you different.

7 Comments So Far …

  1. johnO johnO says:
I think the yellow ticket and 'you're going to Hollywood' has a far more appealing conclusion to each contestant's apppearance. X Factor really fell flat there.

  2. Jeremy Jeremy says:
I understand what you're saying, the ceremonial aspect of it is nice, but I have to say, forty thousand cheering fans applauding your auditions makes up for that to me

  3. JJizzle JJizzle says:
I like the X-Factor show better because the singers are different ages but dont we have enough singers? will the world topple off its axis if too many people sing at once?

  4. Betty Betty says:
The X-Factor should have brought back Brian Dunkleman.

  5. WarrenG WarrenG says:
It's weird, but I find Simon and Paula far more identifiable than Steven Tyler and J. Lo. AI did better in the ratings, but it's just b/c it's reached a level of fame that ensures a set amount of viewers. If AI stopped contestants from singing altogether for the next 3 seasons, the name alone would continue to draw viewers in the millions.

  6. Jaime92 Jaime92 says:
    X-Factor=DUD!

  7. Lisa B Lisa B says:
Interesting comparison... I like your approach. FWIW... I'd take the old AI or the new Xfactor.
